The Health Index

While a vegetarian diet may include animal products such as eggs, dairy and honey, a vegan diet excludes all animal products.

A carefully planned vegetarian diet may be able to supply all essential nutrients, but a vegan diet is trickier. Some essential nutrients – most famously vitamin B12 – occur only in animal products, and vegans must therefore supplement them.

Like vegetarians, vegans tend to be well informed about nutrition and healthy eating, but there is a lot of misinformation out there, and much of it can be confusing or even downright incorrect. To make sure that you and/or your children are getting all the nutrients you and they need from a vegan diet, speak to a nutrition practitioner.
